Saving Money on Homeschooling Expenses

As a homeschooling parent, you're devoted to giving your child the best education possible, but you'd like to not go broke doing it!

Hopefully the following tips and ideas can help stretch that homeschooling dollar!

Don't forget that there are FREE curriculum aids all around you for the taking! Store sales fliers can make great math lessons! (Devise story problems like "Feed a family of four for a week with only $100" or "You have $65 to spend. What items would you purchase to create an entire outfit and why?") Ads online, on TV and in magazines can be used to help develop critical thinking. Ask your child questions like, "What message is the advertiser trying to get across?" or "Do you think the ad is effective? Why or why not? Does it make you want to purchase the product?"

Don't forget to get your savings! As a homeschooling parent, you're often eligible for store savings programs. Remember to speak up and ask!

Looking for the basics? If you could simply use more paper for your kids to use for art projects or as scratch paper for figuring math problems, visit your local printery, office supply store or any copy center. Often these places recycle or throw away the scraps left over after completing jobs for customers. You may be able to get a great variety of paper colors and sizes for FREE!

Find out what your local public school does with discarded curriculum. A public school often adopts new science, math and language arts curriculum every few years. When they do, there are countless student books and teacher guides that are either simply given away or sold for cheap at a school district garage sale. This is a great way to get some tried and true staple curriculum for cheap!
